报告人简介:

Prof. Saurav Goel is a leading figure in manufacturing research, holding a primary chair at LSBU in London and Visiting Professorship position across India, China and the UK at several prestigious Universities such as Cambridge, Manchester, Cranfield, Nottingham, Harbin, Nanjing, IIT and few others. With over £10 million research funding and more than 200 published papers, his work has earned him a spot among the top 2% of scientists globally for five consecutive years. A Fellow of both the Higher Education Academy and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mines, he also serves as Associate Editor of the Q1 Journal namely “Journal of Manufacturing Processes”. He has published over 200 Journal papers in prestigious Journals such as Progress in Materials Science, Int J of Machine Tools and Manufacture, Nature Asia Materials, Applied Physics Reviews and Hydrogen Energy. His research, supported by 6,000+ citations, includes insights on experiments and simulation on a wide range of intelligent manufacturing topics. Recently, his work onNature-inspired Materialsattracted interested of the UK newspaperGuardianto discuss the penultimate gateway to achieve Sustainability through scientific understanding of the processes that mother Nature adopts.

报告摘要:

The talk will begin by briefly sharing his research journey from undergraduate studies in India to migrated to the UK and becoming a Chair Professor with experience across the UK and China. He will open the session by highlighting the evolution of Precision Engineering, which has advanced from applications in astronomy, space, and defense to more recent innovations in healthcare, such as the development of "bactericidal surfaces"—a significant 21st-century challenge discussed in a featured review paper published by the American Institute of Physics. In his presentation, Professor Goel will be highlighting the use of ultra-precision manufacturing techniques to process high-strength, “difficult-to-cut” materials with near-atomic accuracy. He will also discuss how modern high-computing capabilities and advanced simulation methods are facilitating new discoveries in precision material processing. One example he will share will be about nature-inspired patterns, such as those found on cicada and dragonfly wings, used to create next-generation medical devices like stents, implants, and surgical tools designed to reduce the need for repeat surgeries due to bacterial infections. Professor Goel will also share the emerging application of AI in developing more environmentally friendly materials that will make the environment more sustainable. He will conclude by sharing his vision for the future, noting that rapid advances in quantum computing and artificial intelligence have the potential to solve numerous challenges to improve quality of life.
